Hello all.

I have a question about stress concentration factors in a ductile pin.  In order to calculate the pin diameter in perfect shear, I have always used the crossectional area and load to determine the average shear stress in the pin and design to that.

I know there is some increase in the stress on the side of pin where the force is applied (I'll call that the front), but I have always considered it to be neglible in ductile materials.  Someone recently told me they assumed the local stress there is 5 times higher than the average, which seams a little overkill.

Is this stress concentration on the "front" of the pin a consern?  Is it really 5 times higher?

If you have a static load on the shear pin then your approach is fine.  If you have a cyclic load that a stress concentration factor should be included.  A factor of five appears excessive unless you have "jerks or impacts" in the loading of the pin.
