slowdown at high resolutions

slowdown at high resolutions

slowdown at high resolutions

(OP)
i just got a dell 24" wide screen monitor.  it has a native resolution of 1920x1200 but when i stretch out the solidworks window to that size is slows down terribly.  just hovering over a plane takes it a good minute to highlight it.  i found that if i shrink the window down to around 3/4 of the full screen it goes back to normal speed.

anyone else had this problem? anyone know how to fix it?

im running solidworks 2006 SP0 on a p4 2.8 GHz with 1024MB of ram and a radeon x1300 video card with 512MB memory.

Thanks!

RE: slowdown at high resolutions

Its most likely your VC - Radeon is not a certified card and to be honest I have seen more slow dwons and crashing with the Radeon. If you don't use a certified VC you really can't complain. I have a GF 6800 at home and yes my SW is slower then it is at work... and at home I run the same resolution. Mine at home is not that slow so its your VC. Try replacing it with a CAD card and I bet you would see at big improvement in speed.

RE: slowdown at high resolutions

To be precise, the drivers weren't built to handle 3-D CAD programs. The hardware itself is totally capable—in fact, in many cases, it's just about identical to the FireGL, sharing around 90% of the components, including the PCB.

Using the SW site, and selecting "Tested" video cards (rather than "Certified"), the following information is given for the Radeon x1300:

Quote:

Limited number of accelerated windows. Amount of video memory determines the number. If 64M - 128M of memory, 5-12 accelerated full screen windows.
Catalyst Version : 6.4
2D Driver: 6.14.10.6606
3D Driver: 6.14.10.5757

Given that you have 512 MB of RAM on the video card, you definitely have enough memory to run at least one full-screen (1900×1200) window in 3-D accelerated mode. So it's probably a driver incompatibility.

If you haven't already done so, it might be worth trying to install the exact same driver version that they used (Catalyst 6.4), in an attempt to replicate their (limited) success.

RE: slowdown at high resolutions

It may only list those limitations, but there are some that are not listed because when you use an uncertified card there are some things that cannot determined every time. What you see is a true limitation, but there are other things that change between drivers and slow performance is one of them in most situations, but there are more like crashing. corruption, etc... So all you are seeing at the website is what was consist.
