Accelerated Nitronic 60 pitting in borehole fluids

Accelerated Nitronic 60 pitting in borehole fluids

(OP)
Does anyone have experience with corrosive pitting of Nitronic 60 (or any nitronic stainless steel)?  My particular observation is with exposure to borehole fluids in a non-producing gas well.  We dont have record of the content of fluid.  We saw pitting of up to 40% penetration of a .070" thick wall of Nitronic 60.  Corrosion area was the protective cover of a strong permanent magnet.  The material was enclosed in a PVC shipping tube without having fluid cleaned off for three weeks.  Was it the stagnant air inside enclosure that helped in acceleration of pitting?  Wells often have H2S content.  We have never seen this type of corrosion on this material.  Any help would be good.  Thanks

RE: Accelerated Nitronic 60 pitting in borehole fluids

There is almost no alloy that I haven't seen attacked in an oilfiled envronment.  Nit 60 isn't particularly corosion resistant as alloys go.

Covering of a strong magnet?  Was there any material clinging to the cover?  If so then this would form crevices and make the corrosion environment more severe.

There are a lot of possible causes of this corrosion, but the details are probably not important. The key here is to clean them off.
