i have been researching the answer to how i can
decide on the dimensions of a concrete base for a single cylinder diesel engine.

is there anyone on here that can lead me in the right direction or help me to find source information.

I have see foundations sized using concrete mass of 4 times the machinery with rebar is installed where it will improve the structural capacity of the foundation,  two layer approach of top and bottom.  Some codes specify allowable vibration limits (like NEMA MG-1 allows 0.15 ips while resiliently mounted and 0.12 while rigidly mounted).

Both of BOO1's fine links mention the height of the CG is important, with a relatively tall or deep foundation having a rocking frequency much lower than the simple vertical calculated frequency. Thus relying heavily on one of the ratio-of-masses in design leaves me vulnerable. Correcting foundation resonance problems is generally BIG trouble.

Tmoose's comment is a valid point.  A few other rough rules of thumb:

Foundation depth >= 1/5 width
Foundation depth >= 1/10 length
Top of Foundation to CG of Machine >= 2/3 to 1 x Foundation Width
