Methanol Storage Tank Standards

Methanol Storage Tank Standards

Methanol Storage Tank Standards

(OP)
Hello,

I am working on a project to do a safety assessment on an existing methanol storage tank and piping system.  I have the the current IFC, NFPA, and UFC fire codes.  Does anyone know any other documents or agencies that I check with regarding methanol tank storage and piping.

If it helps, the system I am assessing is two 10,000 gallon storage tanks and 1.5" Schedule 80 piping that is used in to provide methanol to denitrification tanks at a wastewater plant.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Chris

Check with the state or local environmental agency.  AGTs storing hazardous substances may be regulated in your area.  Agencies often have checklists of requirements.  Have you checked to see if there is an ASTM standard?

Greenone,

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions.  There are some state rules on AGT and I do have a copy of them.

Thanks,
Chris

RE: Methanol Storage Tank Standards

I work in Wisconsin and have recently been working on a biodiesel site that includes methanol and methoxide tanks.  One set of regulations I've had to work with is from the Department of Commerce, which has a section in the Administrative Code called Chapter Comm 10: Flammable and Combustible Liquids where we've had to review some safety and compliance regulations.

RE: Methanol Storage Tank Standards

For piping, if its a process code design, ASME B31.3 may apply.  If the installation is part of a pipeline transporting methanol and other hazardous liquids, ASME B31.4 may apply.
