Methyl Hydrate Vs Methanol

Methyl Hydrate Vs Methanol

Methyl Hydrate Vs Methanol

(OP)

I have been experments using METHYL HYDRATE as a fuel. It is ready available in hardware stores as a Painting supply.

The engine that I am using runs fine when af is adjusted to it.

I did a search on the internet, and they are said to be the same.

Can someone verify this?

RE: Methyl Hydrate Vs Methanol

Look up MSDS for both materials. That will tell you if they are the same

Yes acording to the msds they are.

I will asume any tunning that I do will be the same when I purchase larger quauties of methanol and run it.

RE: Methyl Hydrate Vs Methanol

If you use hardware store grade, check purity and water content. You can check water content of otherwise pure methyl alcohol by testing specific gravity.

RE: Methyl Hydrate Vs Methanol

METHYL HYDRATE is poor chemical terminology.
Methyl alcohol is a methyl group ( -CH3) attached to a hydroxyl group ( -OH). A more appropriate albeit cumbersome term is hydroxylated methane.  Hydrate would indicate a water molecule is attached.

Methyl hydrate is also the name for the icelike, methane-water compound found at frigid ocean depths.  It makes the newscasts from time to time since it has potential as both an energy source and a global warming threat (enormous amount of greenhouse gas).  Structure of a Methyl Hydrate (more correctly, methane hydrate) molecule:
