POTABLE WATER TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES
POTABLE WATER TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES
(OP)
Hi,
Feedwater from wells is to be treated and used as potable water, with a portion to be used as feedstock for laundry boilers. A feedwater analysis came back with:
(all are in mg/l)
TDS = 290
Hardness (as CaCO3) = 240
chloride = 37
silica = 8
sulfate = 5.44
calcium = 90
magnesium = 5.4
potassium = .82
aluminum = .19
antimony = .5
barium = .012
strontium = .17
pH = 7.1
bacteriological tests found:
23 MPN/100 ml total coliforms
8 MPN/100ml fecal coliforms
269 CFU/ml heterotrophic plate count
I was told that there are only 2 potential cost effective treatment alternatives of either nanofiltration, with multimedia pretreatment or multimedia filters followed by carbon filters and then softeners. Is this correct? Any other options? Any potential problems with either option?
Thanks for your help.

RE: POTABLE WATER TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES
You should go back to the well driller and have the well driller disinfect the well. A properly constructed well does not require filters or filtration to remove organic contamination.
Treatment for the boiler water supply water will consist of a water softener.
If you are using the water in the laundry, you will need to soften that water as well.
