Mirroring features

(OP)
I'm trying to mirror a feature in a part file.  The part is symetrical in design.  On one side of the part there is a boss which is the feature I'm trying to mirror. Using the parts middle plane (right plane) as the mirror plane.  What's happening is the part is not mirroring as much as it is extruding through the entire part (if that makes sense)... I've tried both checking and unchecking the geometry pattern feature, but same result.

using 2007 sp1.

Any suggestions ...help??

thanks.

John

RE: Mirroring features

It sounds like the initial feature was created by extruding "up to next" or something similar.  I seem to recall having issues trying to mirror features like this in the past.

Is the whole part symmetric?  If so, model half of it and mirror the body as your last step.

Thanks for the replies...

CBL... I'll post pict  in a while... i've got to get this part finished first....

dgowans.... the original feature was extruded using the "up to surface" option.  Maybe that has something to do with it.

Thank you for the help.

John

RE: Mirroring features

Yeah,

I think SWX will barf on this type of mirror, even if you include the "up to" surface in the mirror feature.  There's gotta be a work around though.  Can you mirror the sketch entities or is the terminating surface not present on the other side of your reflection plane?

RE: Mirroring features

One hack that works in this (since I've seen this a million times myself--and it's really a logic issue more than a software limit, although they could build-in a way around it) is to not include the feature with the rest of the body--uncheck Merge Result to form your own body.

When you mirror, mirror the new Body (not Feature).  After that, join the bodies to one another to regain a single solid body.
