Pump shafts of SS 316 and SS 416

(OP)
Dear all ,

What is the main diffirence between SS shaft for vertical turbine pump (water application) of types 316 SS AND 416 SS. I need to know what is the better type to be used and why ?

I heared that 416SS is stronger, but I need to know good and enough technical information.

regards

RE: Pump shafts of SS 316 and SS 416

The 416 will have much less resistance to pitting, but it will have better stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Teh 416 is heat treated to achive its strength, the 316 must be cold worked to increase its strength.
And in todays market the 316 is more expensive, The raw material is about $2-3/lb more than 416.
