Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
(OP)
Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had the same problem as I have.
I have an assembly with subassemblies in it.(made in SW2006)
When I make a drawing of it I place a BOM with the option top level only.
In order to identify several parts in the drawing I create an extra view i.e a cross section.
The behaviour of the balloons attached to the parts in the cross-section is not correct.
In SW2007 you have the option to attach custom-properties to the balloons. When I do this the custom-properties attached to the parts in the cross-section are pointing to the top-level assembly and not to the parts I am trying to identify.
I am using SW2007SP1 and XP-pro
Has anyone noticed this problem and is there a workaround for it?
(My English may not be correct, because it is not my native language)

RE: Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
If the BOM is set to "Top Level Only" the balloons will only reference components of the top level assy. If you are trying to add a balloon to a component within a sub-assy, you will need to set the BOM option to "Parts only" or "Indented assemblies".
BTW, you should convert or save the SW06 assys, parts and drawings to SW07 before working with them in SW07?
RE: Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
But it is indeed not what I ment to describe.
The components I try to add a balloon to are not part of a sub-assembly but part of the Top-level assembly.
(My top-level assembly contains sub-assemblies and parts)
And I only have this problem when I use cross-sections.
I also converted the assembly to SW2007.
My SW-helpdesk in Holland could not help me with a workaround.
So this is the reason I would like to discuss it with the members of this forum.I guess there may be very smart and brilliant SW-users in this forum.
RE: Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
When trying to select the part, are you selecting an edge?
Does it highlight when selected?
When hovering over an element of the part, does a "comment" box appear showing the elements path?
RE: Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
Which custom property are you trying to show in the balloon and what does the balloon actually show?
RE: Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
When I hover over the part the correct part items show up in a comment.
However in our company we added our own customporperties to each part. For example we want to see a detailed description of a part in a BOM (and in the balloon) so we add a property called "Name" to each part we are modelling ,in this property we specify what we want to see in the BOM and Balloon .
When adding balloons with Item numbers the numbers that are shown are correct. But as soon as I try to add balloons with custom property , in this case "Name" things are going wrong.
Another thing is that when I right click the view in the drawing and select the properties of the view I can uncheck the option "keep linked to BOM". When I do that the correct "Name" appears in the balloon.
However as you will understand I want the views to be linked to the BOM.
At the moment I am not at my work and workstation so I can not try anything.
RE: Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
Are you selecting the custom property from the drop down list of the Balloon manager?
Are you adding the custom property to the "Custom" or "Config Specific" section of the model.
If you have the "Name" property in both sections, the "Config Specific" entry will be selected in preference to the "Custom" one.
RE: Custom properties and Balloons in crossections
It appeears that the problem only occurs in assemblies made in SW2006 that are converted to SW2007.
Today I will test an assembly that I will build in SW2007.
I will lett you know if the problems still occur.
