API Section 3.6.2 - max design stress vs design stress basis

API Section 3.6.2 - max design stress vs design stress basis

API Section 3.6.2 - max design stress vs design stress basis

(OP)
In API 3.6.2.1 it says that the maximum product design stress Sd is found in table 3.2.  But then it says that Sd given by a different name "design stress basis" is arrived at via a calculation that (for A36 at least) comes out higher than the table 3.2.  What is the definition of "design stress basis" and which Sd does one use?

RE: API Section 3.6.2 - max design stress vs design stress basis

For A36...
Use the lesser of Sd = (2/3) Yield or (2/5) Tensile.
(2/3)36000 = 24,000
(2/5)58000 = 23,200
Table shows 23,200 for Sd
