Being a mech eng primarily, I am diving into an area that I know only a little about, but I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of some good references that would allow me to learn more about environmental stress screening of surface mount technology/devices.  I am particularly interested in any special concerns with conducting thermal screening of smt (vice through-hole).  Thank you. - TR

RE: ess of smt

Different type components (ceramic caps versus semiconductors versus inductors, etc) and different types of package technology (gull wing versus ball grid array, etc) have different concerns.

One good place to start would be various manufacturer's web sites.  Many have white papers and application notes.  For example, http://www.avx.com/techinfo_catlisting.asp has a good selection of articles concerning different aspects of using capacitors.  Other companies will have information pertinent to their products.

Thanks!  Sorry for the late response.  I'm realizing that there are many variables and each situation is unique; manufacturer information is probably the most appropriate.  I was also referred to MIL-STD-2164 to aid in setting up an ess plan.  Again, thanks.  - TR
