I have a need to weld together 2 dissimilar size rounds in 17-4 Ph material. This is used for an internal of a valve. Please outline the procedure to be adopted for welding and the post weld heat treatment. Thanks in advance.

RE: Welding 17-4 PH rounds

Dear Arun,

By the gist of your question,I understand your material is stainless steel. You have to use TIG Welding here and the procedure is common one;i.e give a welding chamfer accordingly and weld it.Only remember that the machining has to be done after the welded joint because there are always some distortions after the welding.I hope It satisfies your question.

RE: Welding 17-4 PH rounds

I could be wrong but I always thought 17-4PH was one of those materials you avoided welding at all costs. As its precipitation hardening MR0175 I would imagine you would have to re heat treat from scratch after welding.

Thanks Hush, I needed a reconfirmation. That is what I plan to do. Restart the heat treatment cycle from scratch. Thanks once again.
