Static buildup in fuel piping
Static buildup in fuel piping
(OP)
I am designing a short piping run for some Jet A fuel. The run is 50'. I am looking to find out which API spec refers to the max velocity of the fuel in the pipe to minimize static buildup, or other reference which would supply guidance for this application. Is it API 5L? Thanks for helping!

RE: Static buildup in fuel piping
In jet fuels of high purity (very low-natural conductivity)
either high pumping velocities or the use of microfiltration are capable of producing a high rate of charge separation and static buildup leading to high-energy spark discharges capable of igniting flammable fuel/air mixtures. The hazards of static discharge are particularly severe at very low-ambient temperature conditions.
In some countries (Canada for example) and in particular for military jet fuel grades, static dissipation additives (SDAs) in concentrations of a few mg/L are mandatory.
Besides, as I understand, all jet fuel specs. permit the optional use of SDA by agreement between supplier and user.
