Small Gears

Small Gears

Small Gears

(OP)
I'm currently using solid edge for a uni project and very much teaching myself as I go along, but I've hit a problem.  I want to put a small gear into my part (about 20mm diameter) but when I try and create it all I get is a cylinder with no teeth.  I can manage to create larger diameter gears fine so I know it's to do with the small gear diameter but I'm not sure as to how this can be done.

If anyone could tell me it would be very much appreciated.

Another query I have is whether or not it's possible to draw a rack and pinion set up in solid edge (v18).  I have had to draw the rack myself as I couldn't find a feature to do so, but if it's possible to do it any other way it would be very usefull as I have another rack to draw yet.

Thanks.

RE: Small Gears

Hi,

how did you try to create the small gear, using Engineering
Reference
or just by sketching it, and doing a protrusion?

For a rack you may create it like this

thanks for the link to the rack, should come in very usefull.

I was using Engineering reference for creating the gear.  I suppose I could just sketch it can do a protrusion, but I was hoping to make it using engineering reference and wasn't sure why it doesn't work.

Thanks.

RE: Small Gears

Hi,

I've checked it with V18 and it did work:

Gear

the outside diameter is 21.xxx mm (all features suppressed)

After pressing Create you have to save 2 times and then reopen
either one (it will create always 2 gears)

BTW: when doing it 'roll your own' just model one tooth and
then use circular pattern to get it proper

/Edit

the comment:

After pressing Create ...

is related to the Engineering Reference not to the sample winky smile

mmm, strange that it worked for you but not for me.  How do you mean that you had all features suppressed?  I'm pretty new to SE so am not too sure of all these things.

Unfortunately that file you put up wouldn't open for me as it was just telling me it was corrupt.

RE: Small Gears

Hi,

I've reloaded it so the above link is still valid

Outside diameter is 21,6 #of teeth 25

Suppressed means: when you open the file you will see
in the edgebar that all features show a read cross and
nothing is displayed. Just select them all --> RMB
unsuppress. I've done this to keep the file small.

Thanks, that worked ok for me and I can just use that in my design.  Still can't see why it wasn't working for me, but it doesn't matter too much.

Now I just need to make a rack to fit the gear and I'm all set, but hopefully that shouldn't be too difficult.
