Schedule formula: referenced in codes?

Schedule formula: referenced in codes?

Schedule formula: referenced in codes?

(OP)
Hi all,

I would like to know if the schedule formula (as follows) is referenced in an applicable code such as ASME B31-3, or if is "only" good pratice.

Schedule = 1000 * (design pressure in piping)/(allowable stress at design temperature)

I.E., if results of a piping stress analysis are allowable to the codes such as B31-3, but not to schedule formula, is there any risk?

Yours truly,

tigny

RE: Schedule formula: referenced in codes?

Well, its not current code.

I haven't checked your formula against the code formulas, it may work, and it probably does... as far as it goes, but since its not code, there's no real reason to check it anyway.  Its just as easy to check the code formula for pressure stress.  What may be the more important point to think about is that the codes require all loads to be checked in combination for the most critical stress case and that formula only applies to stress developed by internal pressure.  It ignores everything else, of which thermal stress, axial forces and bending from exterior applied loads such as wind, snow, ice and seismic loads may be only a few.
