Which piping code specifies the high temeperature limt of the following most common used bolting materials? (For valves to be used in ASME B31.3)
ASTM A193 B7, B7M, B8, B8M, B16 ..
ASTM A194 Grade 4, 7, 8, 8M, ..
Thanks

RE: High Temperature limit of the ASTM A193 and A194

ASME 2004 Edition B31.3, see Appendix A, Table A-2.

RE: High Temperature limit of the ASTM A193 and A194

Code case 1489-2 allows us to use Division 1 allowable stresses for Division 2 design when the design temperature exceeds the allowable temperature listed in Section II, Part D for the Division 2 stresses if a vessel is not classified as cyclic service.

For the B16 studs you can use 25,000 PSI at 800 degF and 23,500 PSI at 850 degF if the stud diameter is less than 2 1/2". Use 25,000 PSI for all temperatures under 800 degF. Minimum yield strength is 105,000 PSI, minimum tensile strength is 125,000 PSI, mean coefficient of thermal expansion is 7.85 x 10^-6 in./in./degF at 825 degF.
