I might feel a little odd on one of those.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

I recal fold up bikes being relatively 'popular' in the 80s for a while in the UK, not that fancy lay down kind more like a regular bike.

I don't think they were that good though and I haven't seen one for a long time.

I've also seen items on TV in the 90s (might have been 2000-2001) about fold up scooters too.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

Back of my car?  That looks bigger than my car!

Hi greenone

If this is your car you can put the byke on the roof of the car

If that was my car I would look for a tree to drive it in to...

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

Well, I think he's already reversed it into a wall.

I had a go on a recumbent. Great fun on the flat and downhill, on the open road.

Not very good uphill, and scary round town.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

Greg,
but mileage (or kilometerige?) must be close to those 45mpg, right?

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

We see a lot of those 'cars' in Holland, especially Amsterdam. Those 'cars' have a maximum of 45 km/hr, which means one can drive them without a drivers license, you only need a 'scooter-drivers-license'. Profits: park it on the walkways, take the bike-roads, use the ferry (which doesn't take cars) int he centre. And of course stay dry all the way!

Also the fold-bikes are used very much here. You can take them for free in trains, busses and other public transport. This means you can use them from the station to your work and to home. Fold scooters are seen too, but less.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

That funny little car looks like an earlier version of the Smart Car by Mercedes.  Still, even with a short car I don't think they will get out of that space in a hurry.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

I've been looking for a collapsible bike for awhile, the problem is anything that folds up relatively small is relatively hideous when unfolded.

Do rollerblades count?

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

Roller blades are about all that fit in my boot-I have a Mini convertible, but i can't figure out how to post a pic.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

Scotty,
I don't know if you could get up enough speed to do much damage to yourself though.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

greenone, old 'real' mini or the new one?

If an old one you must have small feet to fit the blades in the trunksmile

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

No, a new one.  Big compared to the original, but teeny compared to the SUVs in the lane next to me.  But all I need is room for the dog-he can pull me on the roller blades!

Hi greenone

Pick your convertible, leave the dog, seat the bike next to you and go to a green field for a bike ride with pure air, far way from SUV“s.

cheers

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

I don't see much benefit in a folding recumbent bike, as the benefits of such a bike are best when the bike is designed to do what its good at, that is, to provide a good aerodynamic platform for riding. It has other drawbacks, such as lack of visibility from cars compared to an upright rider too. However, in terms of folding bikes, this is the best that I've seen: http://www.nicolai.net/products/e-frames/e-helius-cc-trv.html
It has a pricetag to match though.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

FreddyNurk, there are several recumbents that ride well and fold.  The requirements are not mutually exclusive.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

I apologise if what I stated was misinterpreted, perhaps it has been biased due to my experiences riding a bike to work. I have no doubt there are good recumbents that ride well, folding is a bonus, though from what I've seen they're somewhat larger than a normal bike.

As I ride a bike off the side of the road to and from work, I cannot see myself sharing the tarmac with cars whizzing past at 90-100km/h while I'm in a recumbent vehicle. I think they're a great idea, particularly if faired so that rain isn't an issue, however, I don't see them being that practical, particularly in terms of flying to another city and unfolding the bike and riding away from the airport. Again, this may be biased due to my experiences, and it must be added, Australia hasn't the same scale of large cities as elsewhere.

RE: Transports you can put in the bag of your car

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population
Rank - Statistical Division/District - Preliminary Estimated Resident Population, 2005 [2]
1 Sydney, New South Wales 4,254,894
2 Melbourne, Victoria 3,634,233
3 Brisbane, Queensland 1,810,943
4 Perth, Western Australia 1,477,815
5 Adelaide, South Australia 1,129,269

5 cities totalling over 12 million out a national population of 20 million.  Pretty urban, although each city does cover a reasonable area.  This means more riding in traffic compared with more compact cities.

For comparison, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_cities_by_population
Rank - Urban sub-area - Population - Ceremonial county - Notes
1 London 7,172,091 Greater London, City of London Greater London administrative area only
2 Birmingham 970,892 West Midlands Metropolitan district, minus Sutton Coldfield, which is counted separately, plus areas in the north of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull (Castle Bromwich etc)
3 Liverpool 469,017 Merseyside Metropolitan district, plus some areas outside
4 Leeds 443,247 West Yorkshire
5 Sheffield 439,866 South Yorkshire Excludes the suburbs of Beighton, Chapeltown and Mosborough/Highlane
