Mule ear

Mule ear

(OP)
Dear all

On our visbreaking fired heater we use “mule ear” type return tube header, device which connects two tubes, instead of using welded return U- bend.

During last turndown some plugs leaked during pressure testing with water. Maintenance people decided to weld plugs and solve problem.
I am not sure that welding is proper way to solve such problem. Does anybody have experience with plug welding?

Regards,

Milutin

RE: Mule ear

The process licensor or heater manufacturer may provide better insight regarding tube repair.  Are these vertical or horizontal tubes?
