Hydro testing a steam line

Hydro testing a steam line

Hydro testing a steam line

(OP)
We have a frozen vent line  containing steam vapour operating at about 15 psig.I wouuld like to add a drain valve  that has to be a new fitting. It is the casing gas line off of an oil well.
Do I need to hydro the whole line due to the addition of this new drain line. The drain will drain to atmosphere.

RE: Hydro testing a steam line

Usually you could just install the fitting and X-ray the welds, IF the fitting is large enough to X-ray.

RE: Hydro testing a steam line

You could just "dummy weld" the drain fitting to your steam line, then hydro-test that connection weld only. After it passes the hydro go back and hot tap thru that connection into the steam line. All you are doing is testing the drain connection weld to the steam line, and don't need to re-verify the whole integrity of the line. Good Luck!  ...Mark

RE: Hydro testing a steam line

We are planning to interior line an old carbon steel pipe approximately 120 lf.  I am considering at this point HDPE line instead of epoxy liner.  I am a little skeptical due to compatibility issues between the HDPE and the medium which is denatured ethanol (3% unleadead gasoline and 97% ethanol).  Does someone out there experience lining an old pipe with HDPE to transport denatured ethanol from point A to point B?  If you did, do you have any knowledge on how the HDPE performed during operation?
