Fishing reel gear system

Fishing reel gear system

Fishing reel gear system

(OP)
We are looking into alternative gear systems for a saltwater spinning reel.  The gear ratio would be close to 4 to 1 with the smaller tooth gear driving the larger.

Considerations (in order of importance):
    1. smoothness
    2. durability in a marine environment
    3. be able to adjust backlash

As a bit of background, most spinning reel gear systems use a die-cast bevel spiral gear system.  In this way, shims can easily adjust the backlash for variations in gears and the gear housing.  The problem with die-cast gears is that they are subject to both wear and corrosion.

We are now looking into various treatments to the die-cast gear that may help the above problems, but failing that, a die-cast gear or a sintered gear (due to roughness)will not work for this reel.

Machine-cutting bevel spiral gears is too costly for our application.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
