Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

I can only think of engineering.com which had some cool things.  Please post any link if you have any.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Try this:

http://www.gchq.gov.uk/codebreaking/index.html

It's the UK's equivalent of the CIA.  On an irregular basis, they change the 'challenge'.  They typically draw on a wide scope of knowledge, most of which an engineer will have at hand.

It can be challenging.  I solved one a couple of years ago.  It took 24 hours.  Not 1hr/day for 24 days; 24 straight hours without sleep.

That's why I hate puzzles.

( Hint: page loading was much faster after I used a site ripper to copy the whole thing to a local drive. )

Martin Gardiner's books?

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

One of the few computer games I ever got involved with was called Lemmings.  It was written for DOS, but is now available free on the internet in a version written for Windows... It's a problem solving game with some extremely difficult puzzles.

Try to dig up a copy... There are 120 puzzles and the first 30 are a cakewalk... then they start to get difficult... guaranteed to bring hours of frustration.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Just got PC-version Splinter Cell: Double Agent for my kid at Fry's.  It's on sale for 39.99 until Tuesday.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

www.mathpuzzle.com
and links from there...

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Has anyone ever tried "The Incredible Machine" (TIM)? The objective is to create a machine out of a series of devices that performs a specific task. There are free demos to try, just google the name.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

A fun and educational one for all is West Point Academy's Bridge Designer.  It's actually a contest for school-age children, but anyone can download the program and play with it.  Build and test bridges to failure with an animated truck that rolls over your bridge.  It teaches the basics of economical strucural design - and it's fun!

Just go to West Point's site:

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Stick1,

I got so addicted to The Incredible Machine" a couple of years ago.  I would stay up all night playing it for hours on end.  I finally uninstalled it from my machine and threw the disc away.  I went through withdrawels for weeks after that.  It is a great game for kids also.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

I found this website once:

http://community.engineering.com/puzzler/

and return to it occasionally to attempt again but haven't yet figured it out.

Does anyone know the solution?

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Arghhh you git!!

I'm up to the one about a lithuanian band?! and now I'm stuck!!

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Look at the properties of the picture, it's title will give you a clue...

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Mensa has some tough puzzles and brain-teasers (though not engineering related).
Mensa

As far as pc games, I'm hooked on Battlefield 2142 (it has an engineer class).wedge

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

boldfish, the way I look at, it you owe me.  I've spent way too much time on the puzzler, and I'm at what it claims is the last level and I'm dead stuck.  If you'll kindly give me your address, I can send you a bill to cover all of the billable hours that I figure you cost me by posting that link.winky smile

There will also be a surcharge for emotional and mental distress caused by being stuck on the level I'm on.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

I'm stuck on the bar. Any ideas?

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Sorry for causing all the anguish; it causes great frustration for me too but I've only been able to get through a few levels and then give up for a couple of weeks.

As you admit that you have not completed the task, I cannot accept responsibility for compensation.tongue

Emotional and mental distress??  My dad always told me those build character -- so maybe I should be receiving payment for helping you become a better person.ponder

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

As for the bar, I took a WAG and was correct.  The logic behind it, though, escapes me.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

took a wag???

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

duh.. nevermind.  Any clues as to the Length of the baR?

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Roman Numerals...

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Now I feel truly stupid after SLemin's comment...

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

I aim to please!

Any help with the lithuanian band one?

Si

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Think resistors, SLemin.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

That's even more annoying, I've been down every possible route from Ohm to the bands and I still can't think what it would be.. a band in lituania?!
I think I'm definitely missing something...

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Woohoo!  I finally got one.  Thanks for the tip jistre.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

This is evil; I struggle through to the last clue and its (apparently) about probability.  I guess I probably won't finish this !@#& puzzle.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Is it the one with three row of what looks like set notation?  I'm stuck on that one, too.

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

What is the trick once you get the two rpn equations solved?

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Slemin, did you catch my hint?
jobiewan99, think dates and reread the clues.
YoungTurk/Jistre, here's a subtle clue:
-Things haven’t always gone right for engineers.
-Sometimes they have worked out fine.
-Other times they’ve quit before they even got a chance.

After receiving a hint on Lithuania, I got the math problem without even cheating.  Then I had a relapse on the last one.  But it was fun anyway.

Now I'm off to http://www.simplecodeworks.com/covert/

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

No!

Am I just being really stupid?!

RE: Engineering Puzzels/Games, interesting questions?

Oh god!
I am an idiot - I've just got it!

Thanks!!

Si
