reading and writing to Fanuc's RS232 port

(OP)
I'm having a great time trying to read and write to the RS232 port on my Fanuc RH controller.  I'm trying to send ASCII files back and forth to my PC.  I'm sure I have the cable and port specs right because I can redirect the console output through the port and it works fine.  I think I'm formatting the WRITE, READ and OPEN statements incorrectly.  Any sample WRITE, READ and OPEN statements would help.
