Following thread 292-128577, can I order SA-333 6 with fine grain practice? I know SA-333 6 can be normalized, however, didn't see anything on FGP or any reference to A-20, neither do I see any Aluminum on the Chemistry for SA-333 6. I guess I am trying to take advantage on Fig. UCS-66, Curve C, notes (2) to make the pipe itself IT/CVN exempted at -40 F, so I don't have to IT/CVN the weld (SA-333 6 to SA-516 70N) in the procedure, since both BM are exempted at -40 F?
Also, maybe a dumm Q, can I ask SA106 B be FGP and Normalized? Or I am really asking for SA-333?

RE: Follow thread292-128577 on A-333 6 Pipe

Yes you may per 3.4 of SA-999, which is one of the referenced Specifications in SA-333

RE: Follow thread292-128577 on A-333 6 Pipe

bwhd, UCS-66(g) exempts your SA-333-6 pipe, since it is impact tested by spec (at -55 F, I believe) and if using a qualified weld consumable per UCS-67(a)(2), production impacts are not required. See also UCS-67(d).

Your SA-333-6 pipe does not need to be assigned to Curve C to take this exemption.

Mike

stanweld,

Thanks for the answer. So do I need to put grain size # >= 5 on the P.O.? Have you done that before? any cost factor vs. plain SA-333 6?

RE: Follow thread292-128577 on A-333 6 Pipe

No, because all the SA-333 Gr6 was actually nade with fine grain melting practice.

Mike,

I read UCS-67(a) again, you're saying (a)(2) fits my case on base metal (so it would require IT), however, if the consumables are IT-ed at -40 F or below, then the weld don't need IT, am I right? you ever consulted this with AI?
any such wire/rod suggestions for helium-arc and stick rod?

really appreciated,

RE: Follow thread292-128577 on A-333 6 Pipe

bwhd, yes, you exempt the welds per UCS-67(a)(2), the plate per UCS-66(a) and the pipe per UCS-66(g), and you are done. Further, you only need to specify the plate as normalized if it is 1 1/2" or less in thickness (per SA-516-70), you do not need to specify anything special for the pipe, just that it be SA-333-6.

I have never consulted with AI, have just done it that way for years, no kick backs from anyone.

I cannot offer advice on consumables or processes, but your welding supplier can.

Regards,

Mike

You can ask for fine grain practice and N&T for SA 106 material, but this will not change the impact requirements in Section VIII, Div 1 Figure UCS-66.
