Compressive fracture stress of aluminum

Compressive fracture stress of aluminum

Compressive fracture stress of aluminum

(OP)
I should definately know the answer of this question. However, what would the compressive fracture strength be of an aluminum alloy with a certain X tensile ultimate stress?

Thanks!

RE: Compressive fracture stress of aluminum

Depends on the load case. In some circumstances the compressive strength can be infinite.

For somewhat narrow sections that are not buckling then roughly the same as the tensile UTS, but with a whole bunch of provisos.

RE: Compressive fracture stress of aluminum

Yes, simple compressive strength is more or less the same as the tensile values. But, ULTIMATE BEARING strength could typically be about 1.8 times higher than the UTS... (bearing as in pins & bolts)

An interesting aspect is that some aluminium products are straightened by stretching which slightly lowers the compressive YIELD strength (whilst increasing the tensile value).
