Large Assemblies

(OP)
I am a new Inventor user that could use some help handling large assemblies. At my last job we used SolidWorks (SW), so the tricks I know really don't apply.

They don't do a true full assembly of the product here. Apparently they tried, but the large number of files chokes the machine and makes it impractical. However, for a new hire it makes checking interferences between installation assemblies very difficult.

In SW you could create a configurations in the top-level assembly that would suppress or unsuppress selected sub-assemblies. This would minimize the number of files open but allow you to easily check for interferences.

Inventor claims to handle large assemblies, but I have not found the functionality yet. Has anyone discovered a easy way to handle this?

Thanks

RE: Large Assemblies

Inventor works the same way. In the Assembly environment; if you have a large assembly, then what you can do is suppress all non-essential parts and/or subassemblies by right clicking on them and selecting "suppress." This is different than turning off the visibility. When you have all the parts suppressed and are down to the view that you want to deal with, save the file and it will ask you what you want to name the detail. The default will be called "LevelOfDetail" but you can call it whatever you like. Hopefully you have subassemblies in a file with hundreds of parts because you can suppress the entire assembly rather than each component in it.

Thanks Powerhound.

We are currently stuck with Inv 10, now I have more motivation to upgrade to Inv 11.
