Communication System Design

Communication System Design

Communication System Design

(OP)
Hi,

I am recently involve in a communication project which involve designing and upgrading

•    Public Addressing (PA) System
•    Signage system
•    Closed Camera TV (CCTV)
•    Elevator Monitoring
My background is in electrical power system design (mainly distribution level)
I have some background in wireless communication. And a graduate class in Fiber Optic communication.

I need some help/tips where to start to get practical info in communication system design.
I Google CCTV and learned a lot of information about this subject.
But what is the General Practical Key Concepts that I should be aware of when designing wired communication system?

I really appreciate any tips or help

RE: Communication System Design

The "key practical concept" is to make sure you get enough conduits installed so that the system can be installed and live through the next 50 years in various incarnations.

I'd suggest doing a little more on-line research and then contacting suppliers of the type of systems you are considering. Once you understand the systems and options, you can give client/owner some options and let them decide what they want.

Then you need to define a set of requirements so you can develop a performance specification for each system.

Thnaks alot that's was very helpfull

RE: Communication System Design

CCTV: The latest trend for CCTV is IPTV where each camera is simply connected by Ethernet (no more analog video). Also look at PoE (Power over Ethernet). There are obvious limits to both technologies (bandwidth, max current).

Also, there are some really neat 3-D user interfaces instead of a dumb-old wall of monitors. Fly through a 3-D space with correctly oriented virtual windows for each camera. It becomes instintive to know where to look next when following a target. If someone walks out a door, you spin the trackball to 'get outside' and see him on the other window. Spin the trackball and zoom in. Better usability and everything on one monitor.

All this is available and in use right now.
