Estimating Surface Settlements Due to Tunnel Works

Estimating Surface Settlements Due to Tunnel Works

Estimating Surface Settlements Due to Tunnel Works

(OP)
Hi,

I am using numerical modeling to estimate ground surface settlements due to tunnel works.  I did the modeling in two stages.  First, I used Mohr-Columb models to estimate the extents of the medium that is affected by tunnel works, which I assumed determines the disturbed soil region.  Second, I replaced the disturbed soil regions with loose material (smaller elastic properties than the original material properties), and used elastic models to estimate the ground surface settlements.

I appreciate any suggestions about the validity of my approach.

RE: Estimating Surface Settlements Due to Tunnel Works

Also - you might want to calibrate "your" modeling with the real work results of the work by Peck - who studied and reported this in great detail.

Thanks for the responses.

BigH: Can you be more specific about Peck works, year, title, etc.

Thanks

RE: Estimating Surface Settlements Due to Tunnel Works

The paper I remember is Peck, Ralph B, "Deep excavations and tunneling in soft ground," Proce. 7th Int'l Conf on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Mexico City, State-of-the-Art Volume, pp 225-290.  I believe that there is also something in Poulos and Davis' book on Elastic Solutions in Soil and Rock Mechanics (1975).  If I can remember a few others, I will advise.

RE: Estimating Surface Settlements Due to Tunnel Works

I'm just curious - what type of tunneling method are you considering?  I've done some work on settlement related to EPB TBM tunneling with precast concrete liners.  the work I did basically showed that the majority of the settlement (i.e. >90%) occurred immediately behind the tail shield of the TBM.  This was based on field observations and detailed surface and sub-surface settlement monitoring.  I would be interested to hear how a numerical model would predict this type of ground movement.

RE: Estimating Surface Settlements Due to Tunnel Works

Dirtguy4587, was just curious if any of the work you describe regarding tunnel settlement, it appears in some specific construction, was published (and of course if so where)?  Sounds interesting - thanks for input.
