Axis layer rule(s)

Axis layer rule(s)

Axis layer rule(s)

(OP)
Folks-
My company has many "legacy" models with jumbled or non-existent layers.  I've been working on mapkeys to import a new set of company standard layers and to assign rules to those layers in legacy models (of course only after manually deleting the existing layers).

One layer rule I'm having trouble with is the one needed to place manually-created axes in a layer I'm calling AXES.  I DO NOT want this layer to include the axes that are automatically created with features such as holes and slots.  These axes are those that the user explicitly creates.

It seems that the WF 2.0 layering functionality is black magic.  I can't seem to find the RIGHT rule (or rules) that will place manually-created axes in the AXES layer.  At first glance there seems to be many ways to skin this cat but the obvious ones don't work.  Any help here please?

Remark:  It would really help if PTC put out a definitive guide to layers.  But such a beast does not exist (to prevent embarrassment perhaps?)!

RE: Axis layer rule(s)

If you search for axes by feature or name you will get all axes but if you search by feature type and choose Datum Axis it will only add Axes that are created and not ones that are named A_# or created by other features.

I think the simplest way to do this is by using the Search tool CTRL+F and select the following options.

Look for: Axis, or Feature
Look by: Feature

Attributes
Rule: = Type
Comparison: is equal to
Category: Datum, or All
Value: Datum Axis

Make sure that the Indepentdent option and Rules enabled are checked on when you select Options on the Layer Properties Rules Tab. I've given my interpretation of the Associative option below. If you hold your mouse cursor on the word Associative you'll get a 2 line description of what will happen if Choose to check it or not.

The top item on the options menu is associative.
If this is checked all the items in your model currently matching the Rules will be added as well as any additional items that are created.

If left unchecked only newly created axes will be added to your layer.

If you want to put all the external Axes in the original model on a layer and make a Separate layer AXES_2006 would be the only reason to use the Non-Associative option.
