I'm designing a lifting bar from material of known yield and UTS, but I'm not sure what Factor of safety to apply.

I known the ANSI/ASME B30.20:1993 states an FOS of 3 based on yield strength, so far I've used this but I need to conform to UK specs.

I know the info I need is probably in BS EN 13155:2003, but I don't fancy paying for it.

help anyone?

If you're deigning lifting equipment for the European market (especially UK), you probably need to grit your teeth and shell out the £136 the standard is going to cost you.  The answer you asked for is about halfway through, with thirty-something pages of other requirements to either side of it - many of which may apply to your application.

I seem to recall a much higher FOS for certain applications (the number 8 springs to mind but I'm not sure, sounds high) so I'd try and get hold of the spec.  Depending how urgent it is you may be able to get it through the library but from the sounds of it you're not in the UK so forget that.  

You can get access to almost all the UK British Standards on their website for a yearly fee, probably more than the £136 though.

From memory for wrokshop lifting gear where there is some risk that people may be standing uder the laod while it is being used, I think the 8 is the design FOS, then proof test to 4, and annually test to 2, times the SWL. As I occasionally whinge, the annual test does more damage to the structure than the actual use does.

However this is all very much legislation driven, 136 beer vouchers seems a small price to pay.
