Line Side Connected Surge Protective Devices

Typically, where exactly (and what connection method) are SPDs connected when installed on the line/supply side of the service disconnect overcurrent protection(not a watt-hour meter enclosure type SPD )?

RE: Line Side Connected Surge Protective Devices

What voltage level? Indoor?

By SPD if you mean what is also called TVSS at low voltage systems (600V and less), I would not connect them to line side of service disconnect, but rather on the bus load side of the mains. SPD should be protected by a OCPD to in case they themselves blow up (like any other piece of equipemnt).

Connection method depends on the type of system you have (3 ph, 3-wire or 3 ph, 4-wire). All SPD manufactuer's literature contain wiring diagrams and application notes.

Thanks for your reply.
Indoor use, up to 1000V, and installation in accordance with article 280 of the NEC. Currently, these devices are referred to as Surge Arresters, but soon to be designated SPD.I am interested in the physical connection within the service panel ahead of the  service disconnect as permitted by 230.82(4).
