Toolbox database access error

Toolbox database access error

Toolbox database access error

(OP)
Hello,

I'm getting an error that won't let me use the hole wizard. It is an access error related to toolbox. Below is the error which I'll explain further. The computer name is my computer and I have been setting up the toolbox, but I'm not logged in as the Admin (I do have admin rights though). Earlier this morning, I was able to use the hole wizard without getting this error. I'm on SW 2007 sp1.1

Any suggestions for cause, and/or fixes?

Thank you,

RE: Toolbox database access error

Reboot and see if the problem goes away.

Are you sure that you or somebody else didn't log in and then not log out?

Take a look at your task manager and see if there's a process running uner the 'Admin' account.

You may have to chalk this one up to the Windows gremlins.

I tried rebooting and it worked once....odd I know. I don't see anything showing the Admin account being used.

What were you referring to when you mentioned not "logging out"?

Maybe I should start a new thread, but I'm going to start with continuing this one.

I somehow got around the error from the initial post, but now I'm seeing it again. I discovered that the computer that maintains access has mmc.exe running as the administrator on that system. I'm not sure why or how to control that. Any tips as to where to go from here? Its becoming quite an issue here.

One thing I've discovered. The last person to access the toolbox configuration(Options>Hole Wizard/Toolbox>Configure); the administrator on that computer claims sole access to I believe the SWbrowser.mdb file. I don't know why or how to change that, but that's what is causing the error when I try to create or edit a Hole wizard feature

RE: Toolbox database access error

So your Toolbox is on a multi-user enviroment in hte fact that the TB is located on a server? YOu have the TB setup on a users station and each of you are pulling from his box?

I think you should try and move the TB to a server location Copy the DB to that location and change each users path to the  location on the server and see if you get the same response

Scott,

Actually, we have the TB on the server. But when a user goes into the Options>Hole Wizard/Toolbox>Configure, then the administrator account of that users computer takes sole ownership (according to the dialog box). Keep in mind that it just started doing it the other day, after having been working fine.

RE: Toolbox database access error

Have you checked the Event viewer logs of the application and system for both the server and the users machine?

RE: Toolbox database access error

Craig I just found this at the SW knowledge base:

Quote:

Question:

Unable to open the master database due to the following database access error: "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file \path\swbrowser.mdb". It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view this data".

Answer:

The specific causes of this error are unknown, but it suggests a permissions problem.  This may occur on only one computer.  In other words, other computers can access a shared "swbrowser.mdb" database without a problem.

Check to make sure that the swbrowser.mdb file has proper permissions to allow the user to read and write to the database.

If that does not address the problem, there may have been an install problem.  Before uninstalling and reinstalling try registering the dll's associated with Toolbox and Hole Wizard.

1.  C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ADO\msado15.DLL
2.  C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.DLL
3.  C:\Program Files\Common Files\system\ADO\msadrh15.dll
4.  C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ADO\msadox.dll

RE: Toolbox database access error

Scott,

Thanks. The error I'm getting is slightly different in wording, but it appears to be related similar in that it involves access to the swbrowser.mdb.

I checked permissions to the file and everyone should be able to access it. Also, I restarted the server the other day and its worked since then. However, I don't think its fixed, it just hasn't given us a problem since no one has went in to the configure dialog box (tools menu) since I restarted. That's when the problem occurs. I'm afraid to try it because the only fix appears to be restarting the server.

RE: Toolbox database access error

I've finally got a permanent fix to the issue I think. SW was looking at the issue and pointed out that there were a couple extra files in my <Toolbox Location>/lang/English/ folder. There as a file named test.txt that I could not access nor delete with any administrator or user account. I'm not sure how it got there, but it seemed to be affecting access permissions to the entire toolbox. While waiting on the solution, I noticed that the file was suddenly gone. After its "disappearance/deletion", the TB worked fine. Hopefully this will get someone started in the right direction if this problem appears again.
