How to simulate crack formation at mesh edges

How to simulate crack formation at mesh edges

How to simulate crack formation at mesh edges

(OP)
Hi, Group,

I want to model the fragmentation process of material under impact in which the path of cracks is unknown in advance. The ideal situation should be that cracks initiate at mesh edges and propagate when a criterion met, then the network of cracks will be simulated automatically. The cohesive element I tried seems to model the crack pattern only for prescibed crack path. Does anynody can guide me in this aspect and provide detailed suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am using ABAQUS. 6.6.1 /Explicit.

Regards,

Zhigang
