Cantilever brackets

Cantilever brackets

Cantilever brackets

(OP)
Hello,
I'm mounting a piece of ITE equipment, 18 x 1.5 x 10 inches, approx. 7 lbs, using a mounting bracket on either end made from .125 aluminum.  The brackets are L shaped and will be mounted on the ends of the unit and then mounted to uprights thus creating the cantilever.  I need to know how to determine the stresses at the brackets and if tearing is a possibility...or to perhaps calculate what the max weight the brackets can handle.
TIA
Cherkey
Don't know if my little diagram will display correctly...

RE: Cantilever brackets

7 lbs is extremely light when it comes to equipment weight.  1/8" thick piece of aluminum angle bracket should be adequate for a 7 lb equipment, though being a structural engineer, I'd provide a steel angle.

If you want to perform calculations for completeness, building codes have equations for determining lateral coefficients.  Being such a light unit, though, I would design the brackets to resist stresses resulting from, say 25 lbs lateral load applied at the top (design for someone pushing it).
