Need help/suggestions on the basics.

Need help/suggestions on the basics.

Can anybody suggest some good books or manuals that can explain the basics of fluid dynamics.  I have to admit that fluids was far from my favorit class in college.  Now I have been out of college for 6 years and not used any fluids since school.

Currently I am working on projects that are HVAC related.  When it comes to the thermodynamics I am no pro but I have a better grasp of things.  However when it comes to air flow in ductwork I am a lost cause.

I know that there are ways to look at ducts or pipes and determine the loss coeficients for flow as well as for heat.  I have see it done before but I have no idea how to do it.

I need a book that I can use to walk thru how to do htings like this.  I deal mostly with air (Compressiable fluids) so I want to focus on that but I don't mind re-learning some about liquids or incompressiable fluids.  I need something that is well written and easy to understand with good examples.

I need to get a grasp on this stuff as quickley as I can.

Crane Technical Paper #410 is the bible for most pipe flow analysis.  You can purchase it online: http://www.tp410.com/

Have you tried the "ASHRAE Fundamentals Handbook" ? Expensive but pretty much answers everything.

RE: Need help/suggestions on the basics.

iainuts is correct about the "bible". But Crane 410 is easy to follow provided that the reader has a basic knowledge of air flow.  ASHRAE is little more difficult reading but is comprehensive.

Years ago (1981), I obtained SMACNA "HVAC DUCT SYSTEM DESIGN" which is informative for the beginner.  I do not know if it is still available.

Well I took a fluid mechanics class in college but I basically remember nothing of it.  I have access to ASHRAE but it way to difficult to understand if you don't have a strong understanding of the subject matter goign in.

I need soemthing that is more simplistic and walks you thru topics and then thru example problems.

See the HVAC section in the Mark's Handbook.
