Steel columns in aggressive environments

Steel columns in aggressive environments

Steel columns in aggressive environments

(OP)
Dear all,
Could one of you help me to solve the following problem?

There are some steel columns (existing) sitting in a high acidic environment. Acids can attack the bottom part of the column that might lead to severe corrosion. I do not want to encase the column with concrete as fixing condition can change.

What is the best way to protect these steel columns?

Thanks,
Clefcon

RE: Steel columns in aggressive environments

Since you didn't give the particular acid involved here is a good starting point. As you state the bet bet is to keep the acid off the steel.

For protection of structural steel column bases we normally used a Coal Tar Epoxy. One in particular was Bitumastic from Carboline. There are several manufacturers of these coatings.

RE: Steel columns in aggressive environments

When you are looking for a coating vendor make sure that you know how they are planning on cleaning/blasting the surface.  Getting the surface clean, dry and the proper texture is critical.  There are lots of good acid resistant epoxy coatings, but none will work if not applied correctly.
