Bend Radius for API 5L Pipe

Bend Radius for API 5L Pipe

Bend Radius for API 5L Pipe

(OP)
I am looking to calculate the bend radius of a API 5L fitting.  Are you aware of charts or a simple method to calulate this?  I need to run an internal inspection device in a pipe and it will only pass a 3D bend.

RE: Bend Radius for API 5L Pipe

D is diameter.

1.5 D Bend has a centerline radius of 1.5 * pipe diameter,
so the 1.5D radius for 12" diameter pipe is 18",

3 D is 3 x Diameter, centerline radius for a 36" pipe is 9 feet.

For field or non-standard bends made from pipe, see ASME B31.4 Section 406.2

Quote:

406.2.1 Bends made from Pipe

Cold Bends

Diameter  Minimum Radius
<= 12"    18xD
14"       21xD
18"       27xD
>= 20"    30xD
Most large diameter (>=24"D) field bends are typically done at 1ยบ change in direction in each length of 1 Diameter.  (leave 1 diameter of straight length at each end of all pipes used to make the bend.)

RE: Bend Radius for API 5L Pipe

If you require additional technical information consider calling Bendtec Inc located in Duluth Minnesota.  I looked at there web site and did not see link for engineering.  Many years ago they use to publish bending engineering data for designers.
