Cleaning zinc off 316ss with HCl

Cleaning zinc off 316ss with HCl

(OP)
I want to clean the zinc off a sink roll in a galv line pot using an HCl bath.  The roll would be dipped in a 15% HCl concentration to remove the zinc.  I am assuming we will still need to machine the surface once we remove the roll?  I want to know if the HCl could be corosive enough to cause damage more than 3/1000 below the surface?

RE: Cleaning zinc off 316ss with HCl

Yes.  You could roughen the 316 deeper than you want to.  What about other acids?

thanks EdStainless

We have the HCl already and we want to keep cost to a minimum.  right now we machine about 40/1000 off the rolls.  so even 10 would be a lot better.

RE: Cleaning zinc off 316ss with HCl

The Metal Finishing Guidebook (p. 395 in 2006 Edn.) lists inhibited, 25 vol% hydrochloric acid at 120oF for stripping zinc from copper & steels.
Also, 15 wt% ammonium nitrate at room T.
Also, can anodic strip in 10 (w/v)% NaOH at 4 V, using steel anodes at room T.

Nitric acid would be best.

RE: Cleaning zinc off 316ss with HCl

If you use HCl I would add an inhibitor to mitigate any corrosion to the SS.  You should be a able to get an inhibitor from your supplier of the HCl.
