The idea of not using layers û JohnRBaker response to ewa

The idea of not using layers û JohnRBaker response to ewa

(OP)
One day I had a meeting with some UGS people and they thought using layers was a waste of time. I was not happy to here the rumor that NX was going away from use of layers. I could not understand putting the thousands of geometry, used to create a component with a lot of detail, on one layer. The idea to put the thousands of geometry on one layer, along with data that will be used to communicate to the manufacturing side of things, including geometry used to support a drawing, was simply crazy to me, and could only come from people that do not use the system to do real production design or only does uncomplicated fastener type components.

Now that JohnRBaker explained that in NX5, geometry can be organized in folders…

The folder thing sounds better than layers. I admit, I am totally wrong about my assumptions about UGS people. They are smart and provide the tools we need. Blank, Hide, Show, No-Show, Layers, Categories, Folders, Groups... I will still like NX.

How will I deal with geometry I do not want to show in one draw view but I do want to in another?
How will this be exported to another CAD system?

Just for the record, there are no plans at the moment for any fundimental changes to layers.  However, if we do anything in the future it will not be until after we have provided some other scheme, perhaps something like general purpose folders, that will support similar behavior and capabilities and which can be used to capture current layer allocations of legacy part files.

Sounds like folders would be a great functionality.  It can be tedious to maintain lots of layers.

would the folders act similar to Catia's grouping options?

If you have NX 4, you can see folders inside of the sketcher as well as part of the assembly navigator (really a replacement to filters, but using the folder metaphor).
