Might be a bit of a general question but can anyone suggest a god general approach to faultfinding with estop/safety relays, reset circuits and double stop loops etc

What is your application? Control voltage(s), relays, PLCs or a mix, etc?  
The nature of fault finding often depends on the nature of the fault.

Basic continuaty tests usually suffice. Estop relays are not very reliable in my experience.
