Need a list of sound speeds for MANY fluids.

Need a list of sound speeds for MANY fluids.

Need a list of sound speeds for MANY fluids.

(OP)
So my boss is looking for a dictionary, or some sort of listing that will have the sound speed for lots of fluids.  The more the better.  I'm having no luck finding such a thing.  I know that sound speed can be calculated from density, and the density of many fluids is easy to find, but we're looking for a list/dictionary that goes straight to the sound speed.  Any ideas?   Also, this source has to be reputable enough to reference in a scientific journal.

Online versions or hard copies are both acceptable.

Thanks!

RE: Need a list of sound speeds for MANY fluids.

I have not seen a comprehensive list of sound speeds for anything other than geologic materials.  You can find some fluids from time to time.  Might be some listed in "Hydraulics for Pipeliners".  Maybe that's where I got these.

@ 68ºF & 14.7 psia

Water      4865 fps
Seawater   4993
Benzene    4324
Methanol   3678
Ethanol    3812
Turpentine 4363

N-Butane   3100-3700

They're online now.

For many common fluids the following site

http://webbook.nist.gov/chemistry/

provides the sound speed tabulated with other thermophysical properties.

Gart888,
Perhaps your boss is interested in "transit-time" a.k.a. "time-of-flight" ultrasonic flow meters.  They use an approximate sound velocity for the initial setup.

RE: Need a list of sound speeds for MANY fluids.

Gasunie publishes a very useful book on fluid properties.  In section 2.7.3 (velocity of sound) they have the formula (for gas) of:

c=(1000*k*P/rho/Z)^0.5

P is in KPa(abs), rho is in kg/m^3, and Z is at pressure.  The "k" factors are published in many places (I use GPSA Engineering Data Book).  Gasunie does not suggest a method for gas mixtures, but you will certainly come pretty close using volume percent.

AFT have a program called Chempak that has fifteen properties for 700+ fluids. You can combine the fluids and will determine the combined proerties.

It will cost less than your time for a day looking for the books and going to buy one. www.aft.com

Try visiting some of the websites for ultrasonic sensors.
Search under concentration meters, ultrasonic. You may find a comprehensive list on one of these sites.
If you can visit the Mobrey.com website contact them and ask for a manual for the 7835 density meter. This manual (available in *.pdf) lists velocity of sounds for a range of fluids.
