problems with saving .dwgs on a network

problems with saving .dwgs on a network

(OP)
we are having trouble saving drawing files. we use autocad r-14 and softdesk s8 on a novell 4.11 network and windows 98.  we perform in-house civil engineering design for the franklin co. engineer in col. ohio.

the problem occurs after an editing session and the work is saved. we get an error message saying the drawing cannot be saved because it is accessed by another session. we check thru the network and the .dwg is not opened elsewhere. we then have to use the save-as command and rename the drawing.
when we try to delete the original drawing we get an error message saying the file cannot be deleted because it is in use, which it is not! we have checked the properties of the original file for attribute settings (read-only, hidden, ect.) and everything appears ok. this causes problems if the original .dwg is an x-ref. any help would be appreciated. also, this problem is random which adds to the
frustration.

RE: problems with saving .dwgs on a network

I have seen this problem before but I, unfortunatley was not the one to
resolve the issue. If I remember correctly the problem is with the Novell
side of your network server. I think Autocad has provided a work around
or Novell has a patch. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

RE: problems with saving .dwgs on a network

If a drawing was opened by someone else as an xref, it can screw you up, even if they no longer have it open when you try to save.  Check out the XREFCTL variable.

RE: problems with saving .dwgs on a network

This may help you and it may not. If AutoCad is shut down improperly in the middle of a drawing session, then the lock file that AutoCad uses [Drawing Filename].dw? is not deleted. ( I would give you the extension, but can't remember it off hand, Map 2002 dosen't use them. ) This file locks a drawing file when another session of the drawing in active in older versions of AutoCad (pre 2002). When you open a drawing in AutoCad and it finds that file it opens the drawing in read only mode regardless if it warns you or not. By selecting this file in windows explorer and deleting it you can then edit the drawing. Inserting the drawing into a new drawing might also allow help, but without better understanding of your situation I can't help any further.

RE: problems with saving .dwgs on a network

Edit .....

     The format is .dwk
