Quake in Hawaii

Quake in Hawaii

Quake in Hawaii

(OP)
Here's a link to the news:

6.6 in Hawaii

From the IBC maps it appears that the epicenter location shown on the crude news maps does show a higher than normal Ss (varying from about .150 to .192) and S1 (varying from 0.06 to .088).

This seems to put it into a Seismic Design Category of B (with a site class D).  Seems like a fairly high shock for a B.

RE: Quake in Hawaii

JAE, I think you have your decimal point shifted one place.  The big island is high seismic territory (Zone 4 in UBC terminology).  More like SDC D or E.

gulp...you are probably right...I was looking at it early in the morning without my glasses....

OK...with eyesight -

Ss = 1.92
S1 = .88

w/ site class D - SDC = E

my bad.

RE: Quake in Hawaii

and having actually experienced the "shake" it was a good size. Not the magnitude and duration of the 7.9 shake I experienced in 1993 in Guam, but good enough for a Sunday morning in paradise!
