Blowoff Tank Drain Orifice

Blowoff Tank Drain Orifice

Blowoff Tank Drain Orifice

(OP)
The NBBI Rules and Recommendations for the Design and Construction of Boiler Blowoff Systems (1991) shows an orifice in the discharge line from a blowoff tank and gives criteria for calculating the orifice size.  However, the purpose of the orifice is never discussed.  Can anyone explain the purpose of this orifice?  I don't like folowong code calculations by rote without understanding the engineering philosophy behind them.

Thanks,

Mike
