Pipe Coating for SS316L

Pipe Coating for SS316L

Pipe Coating for SS316L

Any suggestions for a coating/wrap for buried 316L stainless steel pipe?  The pipe is actually double walled with leak detection carrying effluent from an industrial facility.  I've seen coating specs for DI and CS lines and I guess I'm not sure why they wouldn't be applicable to SS, but any input would be appreciated.

RE: Pipe Coating for SS316L

Here is on of several companies that make pipe coating of different sorts. We have use their products on under ground SS pipe.

Watch your applicators as there some shysters running around.

I would give them a call with all your information handy.

Will do.  Thanks for the advice, unclesyd...once again!  Wish I would have found these forums earlier.

Call some suppliers in and get their recommendations which needed to be supported by some test results.  It is hoped that you will be applying cathodic protection to the line in question and so the test results should include cathodic disbonding.  ISO 12944 will give you some guidance on what to look for in a paint system.

RE: Pipe Coating for SS316L

Do you want to bury a pipeline with secondary contaiment in stainless steel 316L? two stainless steel pipes, pipe in pipe?
have you think about stainless steel inside and carbon steel outside? it may be cheaper and in some cases more corrosion resistant

abcmex,

It is an owner's request for the stainless in stainless.  I know there are less expensive ways in fact I would have also considered some form of poly.  I'm curious about your comment about a carbon steel containment pipe in some cases being more corrision resistant.  Would this depend on soil conditions?

RE: Pipe Coating for SS316L

In general SS will fail by crevice or pitting corrosion, localized attack.  In many cases 99% of the surface is in prefect condition, but localized pitting can go throught hte wall.
CS will usually fail in a more gernalized corrosion mode.  It is fairly straightforward to apply coatings adn impressed current (CP) systems to CS.

Most containment systems that I have dlet with use either CS or poly for the outer pipes.
