Linking from Solid Edge to Excel (reverse of normal)

I'm having a problem linking from Solid Edge to Excel.  I can "Paste Link" just fine and make my Solid Edge data show up in Excel, however I can't get the formatting correct.  For example, if I link a dimension variable from Solid Edge to Excel, Excel will display the dimension as "10 in".  This is read as a string and not a numerical value by excel, so I can't do any caculations with it (which is the reason I am doing the linking in the first place).  Any suggestions?
