Is Installation Manager helpfult?

Is Installation Manager helpfult?

Is Installation Manager helpfult?

(OP)
Hello,

I'm preparing to install SW 2007 on 6 machines (upgrade from SW2005 sp5.0). I'm planning to use the Installation Manager; that is if its helpful. I've installed an administrative image on the server and plan to install from that.

Any success stories? or failures?

Thank you,

RE: Is Installation Manager helpfult?

DON'T UPGRADE from SW05, do a new install of SW07... the install manager isn't going to be as good as you using the Admin image for 6 machines. All the install manager does is DL and install the latest SP, but I have had many users have it fail and they end having to go and manually Download it. But with an admin image your users can't DL and install the SP per their seat. You will have to upgrade the Admin image and they will have to install from that image, the install manager can't help you there.

RE: Is Installation Manager helpfult?

The install mananger may speed up the process of upgrading your admin image. I would definitely use an admin image for the six seats. It makes life a lot easier. If you haven't done one before, there are some steps that haven't, in the past, been properly covered in the various documents describing how to create one. While the initial install can be a PITA, it will be much easier to deal with SP's afterwards. You apply the SP to the admin image and the next time the client machine opens SW the SP is automatically installed on the client.
If you want more info on creating an admin image, let me know.

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback. I did an administrative image on 2006. That was a learning experience! I'm still not 100% convinced which approach is best yet; silent installs (command line) or using the Administrative director. I'm leaning toward that since it seems to keep clients linked to the admin image better. I'd appreciate any other tips and suggestions.

Thanks,
