Excessive temperatuve of cooling water return.

Excessive temperatuve of cooling water return.

Excessive temperatuve of cooling water return.

(OP)
We currently use a closed loop cooling system to prevent overheating of spot weld gun transformers and weld gun tips.  The pumps are fixed displacement pumping through heat exchangers.  There are more than 200 spot weld guns in operation.  We are experiencing unusually high temperatures on the return piping coming from a series of weld guns.

Any comments on what could be causing the rise in temperatures.

RE: Excessive temperatuve of cooling water return.

What is the cooling system designed to handle and are you exceeding that design requirement?

RE: Excessive temperatuve of cooling water return.

#1 Suspect: the pump for that group is broken or worn out.

Check the pressure gages that should be installed on the inlet and outlet, compare with the other pumps.  Install gages if there are none.

RE: Excessive temperatuve of cooling water return.

Look for any valves in the system (hot side or cold side)that may be pinched-back instead of being fully opened.

Check the coolant side temperature in/out of the heat exchanger. The problem may be in your chiller system and not the circulation pump.
