converting a .ipj file to .dwg

converting a .ipj file to .dwg

converting a .ipj file to .dwg

(OP)
We have some old files that were done in Inventor and are saved in .ipj format.  Nobody has inventor on their machine any more, so we need to get these files into .dwg format or something we can work with.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about doing that?

I've never worked with CAD stuff before, just trying to find an answer for someone.

thanks,
Vince

RE: converting a .ipj file to .dwg

Hello Ductmate,
An .ipj file is a project file that keeps tabs on the information in the Inventor Project that would have been started when the project was first started. The file by itself is useless. If Inventor no longer exists on anyones computer then you won't be able to do anything with it but it doesn't really matter. All it would have done is keep tabs on all the files and folders associated with "Project X". All the files for the project should still be on the computers, you just won't know which ones went to which project. Here's an example: If you have a ProjectX.ipj file, you would start Inventor and go to "Projects". In the window that opens you will have a project called ProjectX. When you open that project, all the folders associated with it will be right there as shortcuts so you don't have to browse through your pulldowns every time you want to open a file. If you were to open up the ipj file with wordpad you would see text with the paths to all the folders that were associated with Project X.
I hope I didn't over explain that. In short, they are not drawings. They are just ASCII text files.

The best - easiest way would be to reinstall your old Inventor seat. It should be valid still. I think you will have 30 days to register if you don't want to bother with that.

We're trying to do that, but it doesn't want to install for some reason.  I'm sure if the IT guy ever gets around to it, it'll get installed, i'm just trying to get it done withouth waiting on them.

When using Mechanical Desktop it is possible to link to an Inventor file. It's in the menu File.

Ductmate,
Try to do a clean uninstall of your previous version. A google search on - Clean uninstall Inventor 10- or whatever version you're trying to install. This will show you which folders and registry values to delete. This worked for me when I had the same problem. Let me know how it goes.
