Black Start Operation/Control for GT Compressor

Black Start Operation/Control for GT Compressor

Black Start Operation/Control for GT Compressor

(OP)
Can anyone describe the typical black start operation and control philosophy of GT driven Compressor.  Also, please suggest any reading material for greater understanding.

RE: Black Start Operation/Control for GT Compressor

what type of gas turbine?  make, model, etc.

what is the application?

power supply?  electrical or otherwise

typically, in terms of operating & maintaining gas turbines (which includes starting and stopping gas turbines), the OEM furnishes engine operating information in conjunction with the compressor mfg.

the control system not only addresses gas turbine operation, but compressor and plant/station parameters as well.

too vague a question to really respond to.  hope this helps though!

good luck!

RE: Black Start Operation/Control for GT Compressor

If it is a single shaft gas turbine, you may have to depressurise the process loop before attempting a start. Does the compressor have its own lube system? What about the seal system? Seal oil? Dry gas?

What do you mean by black start? Generally, this terminology is applied to GTGs. Idea being that once the GTG is started and synchronised power is available from GTG to feed the auxiliaries. Until then no power is available from external sources. Once we start the compressor, what is that it is available from Compressor system to support continued operation of the gas turbine driven compressor?

Got my drift? Perhaps the terminology is not applicable to compressors.

RE: Black Start Operation/Control for GT Compressor

The terminology applies to many types of industrial plant, for example offshore gas compression platforms and industrial installations in remote locations that need to generate their own power.

Typically, such an installation will need a blackstart following a safety related shutdown and removal of all power e.g. detection of a major gas leak, which requires that all plant and machinery is shutdown and made safe .

Once the problem has been fixed and it is safe for the asset to resume production, then the plant is restarted in a sequence that is determined by power requirements – often an emergency diesel generator (battery powered starter) will fire up first to provide initial power. This provides power for the gas turbine electrical generators to start up – once these are up and running then you can start the auxiliaries (e.g.lube and seal oil pumps) in preparation for compressor startup.

Of course, this is general since there are many different types of plant in many different environments -those with steam turbines and boilers might have a different recovery sequence.
